3/2036 Update
Two full time permanent ophthalmologists have left the Hartford area, one last Nov and one this April. And another job opportunity has no one to cover thier trauma call. Before considering pediatric ophthalmologist positions in the Hartford area please contact all prior doctors who have worked there in the last 8 years so you are properly informed
Approximately 6 years ago a pediatric ophthalmology practice was sold to a health care system and in the ensuing years all the doctors except one have left over call and pay issues.
if you take a job in the Hartford area you will take One Call for the entire state of Connecticut as well as possibly taking hospital consult call, ER Trauma call and practice call covering optometrists and PA’s at times. An outside group has covered one hospital system for 500 a day to alleviate the burden but emploed providers were not paid for call. Last months edition of Beckers Hospital Review reported a daily rate of 900 per night which may be one reason an employer has turned to outside locum coverage two weeks per month.
A physicians assistant who just left a job there said it was so bad she quit ophthalmology entirely and now works at a weight loss clinic since she took call, did clinic where she was under pressure to sell glasses and rarely worked in the operating room.
consider contacting the following individuals re working in Hartford:
Chris Kelly MD at Mary Bridge Hospital 253-792-6630
Paul Rychwalski MD in Omaha at 402-955-8280
Janine Collings at Childrens Eye Care of Connecticut 860453-0945
Rob Spector MD 215-510-8857
Herb Becker MD at pedsretina@gmail.com
Marianna Flores MD 737-220-8200
One of these providers noted a below average salary of 175K for full time work and no extra pay for nicu work despite one system collecting 14,500 a mod and not reimbursing employed providers for mileage
Another provider stated that in Hartford she did more trauma call and saw more ER patients than when she was a fellow.
